My training schedule called for an easy run today and since I decided to sleep in this morning, I had no choice but to get it done right after work. Richard decided to join me for 6 miles, so we took off from my house around 4:45PM to get our run done before dark. It almost worked.
We opted for an easy pace as Rich wasn't quite feeling like himself. He blamed the Chinese he had for lunch. The miles ticked by quickly as we discussed the logistics and the challenge that is going to be our attempt at the Double Top 100 Mile race in Northern Georgia in March. However, Rich never got over the nausea feeling so he peeled off after 1 1/2 loops to head home. I continued on as I wanted to get closer to 10 miles for the day and I was feeling pretty good.
Actually, I started to feel great. Not sure why, I just did. I increased my pace and continued to push without ever feeling tired. When I completed the loop, I really wanted to do another....and another. Instead, I tried to be smart and headed home. The entire way home, I continued to think about this feeling of lightness and easiness. I couldn't figure out what happened and I still don't know. All I know is that it felt great and if I can feel like that more frequently than just once every three years, then I might actually turn into a real runner after all;-) I ran the last 5 miles at an average pace of 7:20 or so, not too bad after having run 5 miles before that already.
