I'm not sure what to call this week, recovery week or taper week. As I still reminisce about my Georgia Jewel 100 finish a week ago, I am attempting to rest/taper for the Dick Collins Firetrails 50 Miler this weekend in California, which I signed up for on short notice, because I am in town on business as this event takes place. How could I not jump at the opportunity to run an ultra without having to make additional travel arrangements?
Anyway, I managed to convince James to join me for our usual Pratt Ave Ranger Station out & back, which we ended modifying ever so slightly in an attempt to retrieve one of James' water bottles that he dropped on Sunday while Mountain Biking on Monte Sano. As a result, we ran a short Mountain Mist trail section before heading back down the mountain.
It was pretty chilly this morning and I ended up wearing shorts and a fleece top with gloves and a hat in additional to the headlamp that is now required on any run prior to 6AM to have enough light before the sun rises. James and I kept a leisurely pace and ran 10 miles in just 2 hours. My legs did feel a little trashed afterwards and my feet are not yet fully recovered either. I did wear the Hoka One One Mafate WP trail shoe for the first time and it felt pretty good. It's hard to honestly judge a shoe when you are still recovering from a very painful race. However, I will be toeing the start line this weekend in the Mafate shoes as I figure it cannot get much worse than my previous trail races of 50 miles and beyond.
